Yellowstone whiskeys are handcrafted in Kentucky by Limestone Branch Distillery (Lebanon, KY). As with many other distilleries in KY, Limestone Branch has roots in the Beam family. It’s lead by Brothers Steve and Paul Beam who resurrected the Yellowstone brand which was established in 1872 by their great-great-grandfather Joseph Washington Dant. They also offer a rye whiskey not under the Yellowstone brand — Minor Case bourbon. It honors their great-grandfather Minor Case Beam.

The distillery first opened its doors in 2011 making moonshine. They were well-known for their moon pie moonshine. Everything changed in 2014. Luxco, St. Louis-based premium alcohol supplier & wine supplier, announced in December 2014 their partnership with Limestone Branch acquiring 50 percent equity.

In 2020, Limestone Branch was named one of America’s 10 Best Craft Distilleries by USA Today. Today the distillery honors our national parks for which the brand was named after by donating a part of all proceeds to the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA).

Yellowstone Select Kentucky Straight Bourbon is Limestone Branch’s flagship bourbon.

Nose -86 out of 100 Points

The nose is sweet with fruit and brown sugar cream of wheat. Yellowstone Select also offers pleasant toasted grain and subtle baking spice notes.

Taste – 87 out of 100 Points

The palate is a step up from the nose. There is more boldness and pop. The front palate is creamy. It screams Greek yogurt with roasted walnuts, honey, and cinnamon. The mid-palate is warming baking spice transitioning into youthful oak. There are also pops of fruit mid and some white pepper on the side.

Finish – 85 out of 100 Points

It’s a medium finish. The first bit is more youthful oak, toasted grain, and cinnamon.

Complexity – 84 out of 100 Points

It’s balanced bourbon but it’s not particularly complex. There are some undeveloped grain notes that would be improved with more age.

Value – 87 out of 100 Points

The price point makes this whiskey intriguing. But Yellowstone doesn’t set itself apart in a crowded under $30 price point.

Verdict – Silver 85.8 out of 100 Points

Yellowstone Select offers great viscosity, especially at the price. The color is apple cider. There are some good flavors going on but I’m not sure I’d return to it with other options readily available that are more developed.
