Reading Progress:

Before getting into our Widow Jane Single Barrel review, some quick information about the distillery. Widow Jane was founded in 2012 by Daniel Prieto Preston (owner of Cacao Prieto) in Redhook, Brooklyn, and started off by hand picking barrels from producing distilleries. But what I love is they are also distilling their own whiskey. Widow Jane explains:

We also distill every week in Red Hook using the finest non-GMO ingredients, including corn varietals such as Baby Jane that are unique to us and that we have nurtured over many years.

Now you may be asking, “Why Widow Jane?” The name comes from the limestone water they use in their whiskey which comes from a Rosendale Mines of Upstate New York (see the video below):

Widow Jane scours the country for the finest barrels of Straight Bourbon & Rye Whiskeys. Hand assembled right here in the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, we bring these to you with non chill-filtration, and proofed with a hard-yet-sweet pure limestone water from the Legendary Rosendale Mines of Upstate New York.

Now it’s important to remember that the reviews below are for Widow Jane Single Barrel, Barrel Picks. Your mileage will vary from pick to pick. That’s what makes barrel picks fun . . . and also a risk. Choose wisely especially at this price point.

Widow Jane Single Barrel Bourbon 12 Year Total Wine Barrel Pick “Green Widow”

Widow Jane Single Barrel

Age12 Years
Suggested MSRP$99.99
DistilleryCacao Prieto
BrandWidow Jane Single Barrel
ProsCreamy and Great Finish
ConsSmidge Muted on Nose

Full disclosure I designed the sticker for this barrel pick. It was chosen by my local Total Wine. Listen don’t stone me — but as a consumer I have typically gone where I get the best customer service. Our local Total Wine has done a great job connecting with the local bourbon community as well as made solid picks time after time.

Without further ado, my tasting notes:

Long oily legs

Creamy, bright fruit, wood, & cinnamon sugar. Muted but complex.

Stewed overripe fruit covers the tongue with hits of pepper and oak on the side and roof that hint at what’s to come with the finish.

Its going going and gone. It’s a 400 foot dinger long. Reminds me of eating a wing with citrus and habanero sauce. That peppery note lingers on the back of throat.

Verdict – The Bourbon Bard Silver (89 points)

I would say, “Buy it if you can” but this barrel pick sold out in less than a day. That should tell you something. Any chance you can grab an aged MGP bourbon from a distillery you trust and from a store with a history of good picks, you don’t pass it up. If you had the chance to try this pick, give me your tasting notes in the comments.
