Uncle Nearest Whiskey proudly proclaims their whiskey lineup the “most-awarded American whiskey or bourbon of 2019 and 2020.” They’ve been recognized 150 times since 2017. The whiskeys did not disappoint. Uncle Nearest is a brand inspired by a forgotten master distiller. The Lincoln County Process was introduced to Tennessee whiskey makers by enslaved people. Nathan “Uncle Nearest” Green was an enslaved Black master distiller who taught a young Jack Daniels the art of distillation and charcoal mellowing. Can you imagine the story of American whiskey without Jack Daniels? That’s Nathan Green’s importance to the American whiskey mythos.

Fawn Weaver is the co-founder and face of the brand. She explains how the brand developed,

“Before we ever launched the brand more than 2,500 hours had gone into researching the story of Nearest Green. So then we had this great story, and it became a challenge to make sure that our whiskey exceeded, or at least matched the story.” Weaver continues, “And so the amount of time, the amount of money, good lord the amount of money, that we have put in to make sure our whiskey was truly premium, and to make sure it really honored not only Nearest, but honored his family members that are still alive.”

Dawn Weaver and Sherrie Moore, Jack Daniel veteran of 31 years, worked closely to develop a process for making their whiskey standout. Currently, they are sourcing TN whiskey and bourbon from five different distilleries then transform the whiskeys with their non-temperature-controlled aging process, unique post-aging double filtration method, and blending. They’ve gone nationwide with the story of Uncle Nearest and his whiskey and are located at the original Sand Creek farm in Shelbyville, TN nicknamed “Malt Disney World.”

The team at Uncle Nearest is also distilling their own whiskey using a mashbill Weaver uncovered during her research. It’s top-secret and under lock and key, but we do know it includes malted corn and hasn’t been used since 1912. Their maple charcoal mellow includes “three separate steel chambers, and within each chamber are three chambers,” says Weaver. “So by the time it finishes its process of rising to the top of each of the chambers, it’s gone through nine charcoal mellows.” They then use a char level #4 barrel and the barrel entry proof is 110 — which I love. Many of Nearest Green’s relatives are still alive and have been involved with the brand and the Nearest Green Foundation.

Emmy-Award winning actor Jeffrey Wright tells the story of Nathan “Uncle Nearest” Green.

Nose – 94 out of 100 Points

The nose reminds me of the buttered cinnamon sugar toast my wife makes for our kids. Vanilla soaked charred oak also play a supporting role along with maple syrup and subtly sweet, white peach. I enjoy the labyrinth of aromas of this premium aged whiskey.

Taste – 93 out of 100 Points

The front palate has a great mouthfeel with subtle sweetness and an evened balmy spice. The mid-palate has a ripe summer fruit sweetness and maybe dried apples or mango fruit leathers.

Finish – 92 out of 100 Points

The finish is long with red pepper, leather, and more dried mango.

Complexity – 93 out of 100 Points

The entanglement of flavors and aromas is distinct and rich. It’s a whiskey I enjoy drinking and sitting with to pick out flavors.

Value – 93 out of 100 Points

The retail for Uncle Nearest’s premium whiskey is $60. Good value for a 100 proof whiskey jam-packed with flavor and viscous with thick ribbons in the glass. More of a side note than anything else, you don’t see too many 100 proof whiskeys that aren’t bottled in bond.

Verdict – Gold 93 out of 100 Points

Each small batch is chosen by Uncle Nearest founders and blended by Master Blender Victoria Eady Butler, 5th generation Green descendant.

Nose – 89 out of 100 Points

I nosed this for quite a bit, and what kept coming to mind was creamy vanilla and cinnamon horchata drizzled with caramel and grated nutmeg. The aromas were subtle, simple, and enjoyable.

Taste – 85 out of 100 Points

The front of the palate offers a subtle creamy vanilla note that dissolves into the shadow of oak and a hint of bitterness.

Finish – 84 out of 100 Points

The finish is charred cinnamon and oak, brown sugar, and white pepper. It’s short and straightforward.

Complexity – 85 out of 100 Points

The nose is a tease of what might be but the palate and finish are uncomplicated albeit in a pleasant way. I can picture drinking this sitting out on the lake on a hot summer day.

Value – 86 out of 100 Points

The suggested retail for Uncle Nearest 1884 Small Batch is around $39.99. It’s a solid value proposition for a solid sipping whiskey that’s age is 7 years old.

Verdict – Silver 85.8 out of 100 Points

Full Review Coming Soon. I had the opportunity to try a single barrel expression at a local tasting but didn’t take notes at the time. I do recall it was an enjoyable drinking experience from aroma to finish. According to Uncle Nearest,

Did you know that less than 1% of Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey barrels will ever be selected as single barrels? In order to be a candidate for our Uncle Nearest 1820, the whiskey must be aged a minimum of 11 years, with a cask strength above 108, and each one is hand-picked by our founders and approved by a panel of whiskey industry professionals. These barrels are exceptionally rare and the whiskey is worth the wait.

In the meantime, check out the Black Bourbon Family review of 1820 along with the other Uncle Nearest expressions.

I’ve also included a tasting down by TiTi Talks Podcast with Samara Rivers, founder of Black Bourbon Society, and co-host of Bonded in Bourbon podcast.
