Sazerac Rye Whiskey Review [2021]

Glencairn Whiskey Glass

Sazerac Rye Whiskey is also called baby Saz as the more youthful sibling of Sazerac 18 and the full-bodied Thomas H. Handy Sazerac. How long is Sazerac Rye aged? This rye whiskey is aged 4 to 6 years old. Who makes Sazerac Rye Whiskey? It is distilled by Buffalo Trace Distillery for its parent company Sazerac. Is Sazerac Rye hard to find? Like other Buffalo Trace products, it’s allocated in many states. That’s the short of it.

I don’t remember the first rye whiskey I ever tried, but it wasn’t an enjoyable experience. It took me several years before trying another one. Sazerac Rye was my next foray into the rye whiskey category, and it didn’t disappoint. From there, I started to explore rye whiskey and all its flavor profiles. It isn’t my preferred rye whiskey these days, but it’s still a great value with good flavor.

Nose – 88 out of 100 Points

The aroma offers a subtle cherry sweetness. The main players are rye spice and smoky oak. There’s also some cardamom and nutmeg.

Taste – 87 out of 100 Points

The front of the palate is floral with toasted cardamom and cherry fruit leather. The backend is a strong rye spice and vanilla charred oak with some rough edges.

Finish – 86 out of 100 Points

The finish is medium. It’s like if you added toasted rye, barrel char, and cardamom into a mortar and used a pestle. A bit muddled but still good to drink.

Complexity – 86 out of 100 Points

Sazerac doesn’t scream complexity, but it’s mostly balanced and a solid sipper and mixer.

Value – 90 out of 100 Points

I mean c’mon it’s $30 bucks. No brainer. The value is fantastic for a rye whiskey of this stature. The only asterisk is it’s allocated in many states.

Verdict – Silver 87.4 out of 100 Points

Is Sazerac Rye good? Yes, Sazerac Rye is good. It made my best rye whiskeys under $30s list.
