Disclaimer: The whiskey reviewed was furnished for free courtesy of the spirit distiller. The distillery did not pay us for this review. This review is our honest and unbiased opinion based soley on how the spirit tasted.

Riverset Rye is a small batch straight rye whiskey. It’s unfiltered for premium mouthfeel and distilled in Tennessee but not by Big River Distilling Co. It’s bottled at 93 proof because Prohibition was repealed in the 1930’s and the Blues rose to prominence as well. Big River Distillery sought to preserve the big flavors found in rye whiskey while smoothing out the rough edges. In my book, they achieved just that with Riverset.

Nose – 93 out of 100 Points

Riverset is springtime in a glass. Floral honey. Ripe strawberries. It’s bright, tart, and juicy which is weird to say but that’s the only descriptor for this smell. It almost reminds me of the gum I used to buy as a kid that would explode in the middle with some kind of fruit flavor.

Taste – 92 out of 100 Points

Bravo. The label talks about creating a smooth rye whiskey. They succeeded. Great mouthfeel. The front palate has all those delicious sweet fruit notes but they’re tamed. The back of the palate then blooms into floral and rye spices. It’s quite nice.

Finish – 92 out of 100 Points

The finish is medium with a pop of strawberry and floral notes transitioning into rye spice and a dash of subtle white pepper.

Complexity – 90 out of 100 Points

It’s not the most complex rye whiskey, but it’s balanced and delicious. Sometimes less is more.

Value – 93 out of 100 Points

At $30, the value for Riverset Rye is great. Jam-packed with flavor. Easy drinking. Great price. What else could you want?

Verdict – Silver 92 out of 100 Points
