Every Old Forester Whisky Reviewed [2021]

Mar 6, 2021

Glencairn Whiskey Glass

Old Forester Whisky should not be underestimated. Not only are they a historic brand as the First Bottled Bourbon, but their current entry-level bourbons and rye whiskeys are also a delight to drink and always offer a solid value. How much is a bottle of Old Forester you may be asking? Their entry-level offerings are in the $20 to $30 range.

Many new whiskey drinkers also ask, “What does Old Forester taste like?” The signature flavor I pick up in many of their whiskies is banana with other classics flavors like caramel and baking spice not far behind. From there, flavors range based on the Old Forester bourbon you’re drinking. You might be wondering, “Who makes Old Forester?” They are a brand out of the Brown-Forman Distillery.

You should strongly consider booking a tour at the Old Forester Distilling Co. on Whiskey Row in Downtown Lousiville next time you’re in town. Now without further ado, check out our reviews of the core Old Forester lineup.

One item worth mentioning before we jump into the review, this Old Forester whisky is 100 proof, but it is not Bottled in Bond. It should not be confused with the Old Forester 1897 Bottled in Bond offering. With that out of the way, what you’ve been waiting for.

Nose – 86 out of 100 Points

The aromas are classic Old Forester with banana, caramel, and baking spice. That’s it. Nothing fancy. No bells and whistles. Straightforward bourbon flavors that are delicious.

Taste – 85 out of 100 Points

Old Forester 100 Proof is less sweet on the palate than it was on the nose. The baking spice was more forward (cinnamon as the star) along with a nice charred oak and white pepper.

Finish – 85 out of 100 Points

The finish is short to medium with cinnamon and subtle banana and caramel sweetness.

Complexity – 84 out of 100 Points

It’s a simple bourbon. This ain’t gonna knock your socks off with complexity and depth. It’s just a good old fashion bourbon sipping bourbon.

Value – 90 out of 100 Points

Old Forester 100 Proof is $22. It easily stands up to other bourbons at the price point. Yet I rarely hear it enter the conversation for best sipping bourbons. If you love Old Forester’s Whiskey Row bourbons, the 100 proof is worth a try as an everyday sipper.

Verdict – Silver 86 out of 100 Points

Nose – 89 out of 100 Points

Straightforward but delicious. Here it is: caramel, banana, and baking spice.

Taste – 88 out of 100 Points

The front palate is sweet caramel and vanilla, the banana is more baked goods, and barrel char. There’s also a bit of white pepper to counterbalance the sweet.

Finish – 88 out of 100 Points

Medium finish with barrel char, baking spice, and just a hint of vanilla.

Complexity – 86 out of 100 Points

Am I crazy? I think this Old Forester 86 has more complexity than the 100 proof. Listen it’s not Birthday Bourbon complex but it easily beats out other bourbons under $20 for drinkability and deliciousness.

Value – 90 out of 100 Points

Did you miss what I said above? I can get Old Fo 86 for $19.99. $19 frigging 99.

Verdict – Silver 88.2 out of 100 Points
