Old Forester 150th Anniversary celebrates George Garvin Brown’s contribution to bourbon and specifically his unique process for batching bourbon for a consistent flavor profile. At his start, George was distilling at three distilleries — Mellwood, Mattingly, and Atherton. These three batches commemorate those distilleries in Old Forester’s history.

“We designed the expression to share our unique story,” said Jackie Zykan, Old Forester Master Taster in a press release. “George Garvin Brown was an entrepreneur and an innovator. I have composed three unique blends to honor his process of batching from the three original distilleries. Each captures a distinct facet of the beloved Old Forester flavor profile, each upholding his highest standards of quality.” This project was the first project completely blended and batch by Jackie Zykan, and she absolutely crushed it.

Campbell Brown, Old Forester President and Fifth-Generation Brown Family Member provides more context: “My great-great grandfather had quite the vision for his whisky. He was bringing something to the market that had previously not existed and today, we instill his legacy of ingenuity in everything we do – especially in the halls at Old Forester Distilling Co., in the same building George ran the business in the early days of the company.”

Old Forester’s Press Release reveals some other interesting facts. “While three of the 150 barrels laid down for this release were lost completely to evaporation, Master Taster Jackie Zykan took the remaining 147 barrels and blended them into three unique expressions, each with their own flavor profile. They’re bottled unfiltered and at Batch Proof – essentially meaning the same thing as barrel proof, but denoting that the bourbon is from a batch of barrels rather than a single barrel.”

According to Chris Morris, Old Forester Master Distiller:

Batch 03/03 – 126.8 proof/63.4% ABV

  • Comprised of 53 barrels
  • Green and spice
  • Nose: dill and bright orange peel, hint of light brown sugar
  • Mid: sweetens in the middle to melon and pine
  • Finish: medium dry, tingling green peppercorns, rosemary, grapefruit peel, and lingering anise

If I didn’t see the bottle with my own eyes and have pictures of it, I would have thought I was drinking Batch 01 from Chris Morris’ tasting notes. I didn’t pick up any dill, rosemary, or bitter grapefruit peel. If I had a chance to revisit Batch 3, I would setup a tasting with different dilutions to see if I could pick up more of these savory notes.

Nose – 97 out of 100 Points

Banana foster with deep rich caramel. Tres leches. Walnut. Baking spice. All the aromas are a mile deep.

Taste – 96 out of 100 Points

More bananas and caramel with a perfectly balanced heat that blooms and doesn’t let you forget it’s there. The mouthfeel is great. Some nice toasted oak and charred walnuts.

Finish – 96 out of 100 Points

The finish is long. Spice. Oak. Subtle sweet banana and caramel.

Complexity – 96 out of 100 Points

The complexity is off the charts. I’ve never had a bourbon with such great balance of heat and complex sweetness.

Value – 95 out of 100 Points

Well worth the $150 price. I would not hesitate to buy this if I saw it on the shelf. Heck, I would buy all three batches at retail if I could.

Verdict – Gold 96 out of 100 Points
