Here we are Larceny Barrel Proof 2021 batches are releasing into the wild. Larceny Barrel Proof wheated bourbon was first released in January 2020. 2020’s Larceny Barrel Proof did not disappoint, so it’ll be interesting how Heaven Hill builds on their success for the second year’s batches. As with 2020, three batches will be released in January, May, and September.

You can determine the batch and the year by examining the label. The labels will have either A, B, or C for the batch with three digits following. The first number will be the month. The last two digits will be the year. For example, Larceny Barrel Proof Batch A121 was the first batch of the year (A), bottled in January (1) and 2021 (21).

So far A121 wins by default, no other batches have released, but it’s a solid first release for 2021. The lower 114.8 proof allowed all the flavors to shine through.

Nose – 93 out of 100 Points

The nose is classic Heaven Hill wheated bourbon. Strong oak presence. Subtle stewed berries. Butterscotch. Caramel. Baking spice. Classic flavors with extraordinary depth and balance.

Taste – 94 out of 100 Points

The initial flavors are refreshingly sweet followed by charred oak, cinnamon, and pepper spice. Just when you think the sweetness is gone it opens back up with more cherry richness followed by a nice white pepper tingle on the tip of the tongue. The mouthfeel is full and creamy.

Finish – 94 out of 100 Points

Larceny Barrel Proof A121 has a medium to long finish. The notes are kind of a savory pudding. Imagine your grocery store carried a cinnamon and oak flavor. The fruit flavors are more subtle, cooked down, and supportive.

Verdict – Gold 93.6 out of 100 Points

The Bourbon Bard Gold Medal

The aromas at first had me thinking solid but not interesting but something about the palate and finished intrigued me. I kept coming back. The lower proof at 114.8 helped the flavors open up a bit more. It was less punch you in the face and more sexy salsa dance.
