Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey is one of the world’s best selling American whiskeys. It’s also polarizing. Some love it. Some love to hate it. Then there is the argument of whether Jack Daniel’s is bourbon. We will get to that as well.

I was pleasantly surprised. I would buy a bottle and enjoy drinking it on a hot summer day with a cube of ice or neat.

Gentleman Jack in the Glass

In this glass, Gentleman Jack shimmers like white gold or light honey. It has a medium viscosity with thin legs.

Nose Dive – 93 out of 100 Points

The nose is fresh-baked banana bread, toasted walnuts, and caramel drizzle. I get a hint of creamy mascarpone, honey, and lemon.

Taste – 91 out of 100 Points

The palate is all creamy vanilla and banana pudding. It’s a more subtle sweetness. With cinnamon walnuts on the back of the palate and just a brief appearance of some gentle oak and white pepper.

Finish – 92 out of 100 Points

The finish is surprisingly sweet. It’s still creamy banana pudding but the vanilla sweetness is more pronounced along with caramelized sugar. There are also subtle notes of cinnamon and clove.

Verdict – Silver 92 out of 100 Points

The Bard Silver 300px

The flavor profile is consistent from start to finish. That’s what I’m looking for in a daily drinker. It’s an enjoyable profile. Gentleman Jack is a great mid-tier whiskey for those that enjoy sweeter notes.

Jack Daniel’s in the Glass

Uber oily. Fully coats my Glencairn whiskey glass. It’s got a yellowish, brown chestnut color.

Nose – 87 out of 100 Points

I’m enjoying the nose more than I thought. It’s vanilla pudding and light caramel with hints of banana. It’s weird to say but it smells creamy. It’s a yes for me.

Taste – 83 out of 100 Points

It’s creamy vanilla and caramel. It reminded me of a Snack Pack vanilla cream pie pudding cup my mom used to pack for me in elementary school. The vanilla is less pronounced than the nose. I also taste pleasant toasted oak and white pepper.

Finish – 82 out of 100 Points

It’s vanilla and oak on the finish which is short but not unpleasant.

Verdict – Bronze 84 out of 100 Points

The Bourbon Bard Bronze 300px

I’m sure I have, but I don’t recall having Jack Daniel’s neat. My experience has more been Jack and Coke, and I can see why that works with the vanilla notes so prominent from start to finish.

You know I enjoyed drinking this neat. I’d be a great sipper on a hot summer night.

Frequently Asked Questions

Jack Daniels vs Jim Beam

Is Jim Beam better than Jack Daniels?

I ranked Jack Daniel’s higher than Jim Beam white label. I’d go with Jack.

How much is a bottle of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee whiskey?

Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey Price
Jack Daniel's Bottle SizePrice
750 mL$17.99
1 Liter$24.99
1.75 Liter$34.99

Is Jack Daniels considered good whiskey?

I’d say it is a good whiskey for a daily drinker. Buy and enjoy it. But be reasonable. It’s also not a world breaker.

Is Jack Daniels bourbon or whiskey?

Yes. To both. Jack Daniel’s meets all the legal requirements to be called bourbon but chooses not to use the designation. If it’s a bourbon then it’s also a whiskey. Jack Daniel’s Distillery would rather stick with the Tennessee whiskey designation. What’s the difference between Tennessee whiskey and bourbon? Tennessee whiskey goes through charcoal filtering for mellowing.

However, if you look at Jack’s website. They say this:

Jack Daniel’s is not a bourbon – it’s a Tennessee Whiskey. Jack Daniel’s is dripped slowly – drop-by-drop – through ten feet of firmly packed charcoal (made from hard sugar maple) before going into new charred oak barrels for maturing. This special process gives Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey its rare smoothness. It’s this extra step – charcoal mellowing – that makes Jack Daniel’s a Tennessee Whiskey. Take a look at our Process section for more information about how Jack Daniel’s is made.

Of course, none of that legally prevents it from also being a bourbon. In fact, some bourbons like Evan Williams use charcoal filtering.

Also, on Bourbon Pursuit Jack Daniel’s Master Distiller Jeff Arnett also confirmed that Jack Daniel’s can legally be called a bourbon.

Jack Daniel’s Rye in the Glass

Medium viscosity. Thick legs.

Nose Dive – 85 out of 100 Points

Vanilla and oak are the primary stars but this rye has subtle floral and rye bread undertones.

Taste – 86 out of 100 Points

The front of the palate is vanilla pudding and floral. Hints of smoke and oak. Cardamom. Fresh pear at the top of the palate. The back of the palate has a pleasant spice that rounds things out with an oak backdrop.

Finish – 84 out of 100 Points

Subtle spice, oak, and moral floral that makes a quick appearance. It’s short though.

Verdict – Bronze 85 out of 100 Points

The Bourbon Bard Bronze 300px

I enjoyed the charcoal mellowing on this rye. It added a creamy mouthfeel you don’t often get from a rye whiskey. The only disappointment was the finish — flavors were on point but it dropped off a cliff.
