Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey is one of the world’s best selling American whiskeys. It’s also polarizing. Some love it. Some love to hate it. Then there is the argument of whether Jack Daniel’s is bourbon. We will get to that as well.

I was pleasantly surprised. I would buy a bottle and enjoy drinking it on a hot summer day with a cube of ice or neat.

Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey Review

Jack Daniels Tennessee Whiskey

Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey in the Glass

Uber oily. Fully coats my Glencairn whiskey glass. It’s got a yellowish, brown chestnut color.

Nose – 87 Points

I’m enjoying the nose more than I thought. It’s vanilla pudding and light caramel with hints of banana. It’s weird to say but it smells creamy. It’s a yes for me.

Taste – 83 Points

It’s creamy vanilla and caramel. It reminded me of a Snack Pack vanilla cream pie pudding cup my mom used to pack for me in elementary school. The vanilla is less pronounced than the nose. I also taste pleasant toasted oak and white pepper.

Finish – 82 Points

It’s vanilla and oak on the finish which is short but not unpleasant.

Verdict – Silver 84 Points

I’m sure I have, but I don’t recall having Jack Daniel’s neat. My experience has more been Jack and Coke, and I can see why that works with the vanilla notes so prominent from start to finish.

You know I enjoyed drinking this neat. I’d be a great sipper on a hot summer night.

Frequently Asked Questions

Jack Daniels vs Jim Beam

Is Jim Beam better than Jack Daniels?

I ranked Jack Daniel’s higher than Jim Beam white label. I’d go with Jack.

Is Jack Daniels considered good whiskey?

I’d say it is a good whiskey for a daily drinker. Buy and enjoy it. But be reasonable. It’s also not a world breaker.

Is Jack Daniels bourbon or whiskey?

Yes. To both. Jack Daniel’s meets all the legal requirements to be called bourbon but chooses not to use the designation. If it’s a bourbon then it’s also a whiskey. Jack Daniel’s Distillery would rather stick with the Tennessee whiskey designation. What’s the difference between Tennessee whiskey and bourbon? Tennessee whiskey goes through charcoal filtering for mellowing.

However, if you look at Jack’s website. They say this:

Jack Daniel’s is not a bourbon – it’s a Tennessee Whiskey. Jack Daniel’s is dripped slowly – drop-by-drop – through ten feet of firmly packed charcoal (made from hard sugar maple) before going into new charred oak barrels for maturing. This special process gives Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey its rare smoothness. It’s this extra step – charcoal mellowing – that makes Jack Daniel’s a Tennessee Whiskey. Take a look at our Process section for more information about how Jack Daniel’s is made.

Of course, none of that legally prevents it from also being a bourbon. In fact, some bourbons like Evan Williams use charcoal filtering.

Also, on Bourbon Pursuit Jack Daniel’s Master Distiller Jeff Arnett also confirmed that Jack Daniel’s can legally be called a bourbon.
