The Albany Distilling Company (ADCO) is the first legal distillery in New York’s capitol since Prohibition and sits on a 19th-century coal yard. Ironweed whiskey is mashed, fermented, and distilled using New York state grains. Their first mashbill was whiskey — first sold as white dog then a 3-month bourbon and now a 48-month bourbon whiskey which I’ve reviewed below. You can learn more about their 600-liter Kothe pot/column still.
Albany Distilling Company was founded in early 2011, and they started distilling in July 2012. The distillery expanded in 2018 and opened the ADCO Bar & Bottle Shop (75 Livingston Avenue, Albany, NY 12207; 518-949-2472 ) in another historic building with a full bar, outdoor seating, and spirits. In addition to whiskey, they also distill rum, vodka, and apple brandy.

This is a high rye bourbon aged for a minimum of 24 months. The sample provided me was aged for 48 months. This bourbon is made exclusively from New York State whole grain, water, and yeast.
Nose – 85 out of 100 Points
The nose is summer berry forward with pleasant grains, light caramel, and cinnamon.
Taste – 86 out of 100 Points
I like this palate. The mouthfeel is good. It’s sweet berries and caramel on the front and rolls into baking spice and a blooming red peppercorn. There’s also a bit of smoky charred oak.
Finish – 86 out of 100 Points
It’s a medium-ish finish with sweet and spicy thing I dig. Reminds me of an ancho chile pepper with toasted black pepper.
Complexity – 86 out of 100 Points
This is a simple bourbon. Simplicity isn’t bad because the flavors are also complex and offer depth.
Value – 85 out of 100 Points
The value is tricky. It’s a solid bourbon. Worth finding, buying, and drinking. The suggested price is $70 which is a bit high for the category overall but maybe not for a craft whiskey. You can also pick up a 200 mL for $20.
Verdict – Silver 85.6 out of 100 Points
