Bayonet Whiskey is hand-crafted by Gorget Distilling South Carolina. They make their whiskey and bourbon from local farms in South Carolina’s Midlands (for example, Belger Farms). Their grains are crushed at Boykin Mill just 17 miles away from the distillery. The mill is a historic, 100-year-old water-powered stone grist mill. Gorget Distilling Co. is veteran-owned and was established in 2015. In addition to whiskey, they also make other spirits like their delicious Cavalier Cream’s. I enjoyed the Pecan cream through the winter.

Gorget is making a hand-crafted wheat whiskey that offers solid flavors. If you’re near the distillery, it’s worth the trip to check them out and support what they are doing.

Nose – 84 out of 100 Points

The first scent memory brought to mind was smoky pork shoulder followed by coffee cake and black coffee.

Taste – 85 out of 100 Points

Creamy caramel pudding and just a pop of vanilla followed by tingly Szechuan pepper.

Finish – 84.5 out of 100 Points

White pepper and charred cinnamon. More creamy caramel pudding.

Complexity – 84 out of 100 Points

I found the finish offered the most complexity during the drinking experience. The nose and palate were balanced but straightforward.

Value – 87 out of 100 Points

“Hand-crafted, locally made, veteran-owned distilling company for $400, Alex.” What is Gorget Distilling Co.

Verdict – Bronze 84.9 out of 100 Points

Nose – 83 out of 100 Points

Mildly sweet dried cranberries with just a hint of pleasant bitterness. Think more of the dried cranberries you’d find in a cereal. Portuguese sweet bread dough before being baked. Rye spice

Taste – 84 out of 100 Points

The first sensation is baking and rye spice blooming on the front palate. It’s bolder than I was expecting for 82 proof. Short-lived caramel mid-palate. Lightly toasted grains and black pepper. The mouthfeel is solid.

With a drop of water, subtle fruits and tangy Greek yogurt show up on the mid-palate.

Finish – 82 out of 100 Points

The finish is medium. It takes a min to bloom but the baking spice, rye, and sweet bread dough bloom nicely to finish.

Complexity – 82 out of 100 Points

The flavors were pleasant and mostly balanced but just needed more depth to take this over the top.

Value – 87 out of 100 Points

The value proposition is the same as the Barrel Proof offering above but in addition to all of that, Gorget has priced a wheat whiskey competitively.

Verdict – Bronze 83.6 out of 100 Points
