Every George Remus Bourbon Reviewed [2021]

Mar 6, 2021

Glencairn Whiskey Glass

The big question is “Who makes George Remus bourbon?” Well, the answer is MGP. George Remus Bourbon is not sourced. It is MGP trying to break out into the marketplace with their own brand. Remus was a pharmacist and lawyer turned bootlegger during Prohibition. He apparently spoke in the third person (Alright George, don’t be so high haughty) and was the inspiration for Jay Gatsby.

Remus was crafty. He worked partly in the system by knowing the ins and outs of the Volstead Act so he could buy medicinal whiskey only to turn around and sell it illegally. He ran a successful $40 million operation until he was taken down in 1925. He spent two years in the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary for bootlegging. Nearly 100 years later, MGP has resurrected this legend to serve as the inspiration for their flagship bourbon.

All Hail King George of the Bootleggers. At least that’s what MGP says!

Nose – 92 out of 100 Points

The nose is balanced with baking spice, charred oak, and stewed apples.

Taste – 92 out of 100 Points

The mouthfeel is solidly creamy with sweet cinnamon as the highlight followed by more apples and red berries.

Finish – 95 out of 100 Points

The finish is long with a pop of black pepper, more baking spice and apples, brown sugar, and charred oak. The surprise element is a bit of citrus to brighten up the drinking experience.

Complexity – 91 out of 100 Points

George Remus offers good complexity with a solid interplay of flavors and depth. The apple notes in particular added a nice touch to the cinnamon and oak notes present.

Value – 93 out of 100 Points

At $44.99, George Remus will soon be a staple in many bourbon collections. From an interview at Bourbon Pursuit, MGP is taking the slow and steady approach rolling out Remus in select states.
