As the story goes in the 1830s, Tom Bulleit’s great great great (you get the picture) grandfather, a tavern keeper in Lousiville, developed a high rye whiskey. But in 1860, as Augustus Bulleit was transporting this whiskey from Lousiville to New Orleans, he disappeared along with his whiskey. Never to be heard of again.
In 1987, Thomas E. Bulleit, Jr. revived his ancestor’s dreams by starting Bulleit Distilling Company leaving a successful law practice to do so. Bulleit is characterized by its high rye content (28 percent). Seagram bought Bulleit in 1997, and it entered a wider market from 1999 to 2000. Later on, the spirits mega monster Diageo (who also bought the defunct Stitzel-Weller Distillery), bought Seagram’s assets including the Bulleit Distillery. In 2017, Diageo broke ground on the new 300 acres Bulleit Distillery in Shelbyville, KY (see a virtual tour below).

Bulleit Frontier Whisky Review
Bulleit Frontier Whisky in the Glass
Bulleit bourbon has medium viscosity and is the color of apple juice.
Nose – 85 Points
It’s a caramel KO with some braggadocio baking and rye spice. It’s not complex but it’s enjoyable.
Taste – 84 Points
Creamy vanilla and caramel on the front palate. Then rye spice and black pepper crash the party. Cue Beastie Boys, “Fight for our right to parttttyyyyy.”
Finish – 83 Points
It’s a medium finish with rye spice and pepper notes and subtle swirls of vanilla and caramel.
Verdict – Bronze 84 out of 100 Points
Kudos for consistency. Bulleit bourbon is solid. But the flavors don’t get along as much as I’d like. It’s a sweet note here. Rye spice there. Pepper there. I’d still be happy with keeping Bulleit Bourbon in the cabinet as a daily drinker.
