The best rye whiskeys over $100 are the unicorns of the rye whiskey world. However, there are some phenomenal ryes that may be attainable. Rye whiskey was America’s first native spirit but Prohibition came along and gave it a quick kick to the groin. In American, rye whiskey plays by similar rules to bourbon — at least a 51% rye mashbill, distilled to no more than 160 proof off the still, aged in new charred oak barrels, but unlike bourbon flavors and color can be added unless it’s designated a straight rye whiskey. You’ll see on our list several rye whiskeys with finishing, for instance.

As bourbon has seen a resurgence, rye has made its own comeback as well, so much so that most major bourbon distilleries are also offering some kind of rye whiskey. A major part of this resurgence has been MGPI’s own focus on rye whiskey especially its high rye Pennsylvania style rye whiskey mashbill. Now let’s dig into the best rye whiskeys over $100.
