Reading Progress:

Bourbon is America’s native spirit — that fact isn’t up for debate. It was enshrined in law by Congress in 1964. Its popularity is booming and it doesn’t seem like there’s anything that can slow it down.

According to the Kentucky’s Distiller Associate, here are some interesting bourbon facts:

  • Bourbon is an $8.6 billion signature industry in Kentucky, generating 20,100 jobs with an annual payroll of $1 billion.
  • Kentucky is on pace for record growth by 2020 – more than 24,000 people will owe their paychecks to the distilling industry for a total payroll of $1.2 billion annually and $10 billion in economic output.
  • Kentucky’s iconic Bourbon distilleries filled a whopping 1.7 million barrels of amber nectar last year, the highest it’s been since 1972.
  • With 4.3 million people, there are now almost two barrels for every person living in Kentucky.

Now that’s a lot of bourbon, so the next question is: What’s are the best bourbons ranked for every budget? That’s the rub. More bourbon (made in KY or elsewhere) is good for the bourbon drinkers and afficiandos, but we need a guide to help us choose the best bourbon for the money. That’s where we come in with our complete list of bourbons ranking below.

Welcome to the Ultimate Guide to the Top Bourbons Ranked for Every Budget. These are the top bourbons to try right now.

The Best Bourbon Under $30

I love the thrill of the hunt and the premium bourbons as much as anyone, but a theme I’ve heard in bourbon groups and among bourbon aficionados is bourbon burn out. Many people are returning to these under $30 bourbons and are reminded of just how good they are. Flat out — these are some of the best sipping bourbons out there. Show them some love and don’t always buy into the hype of price equals value.

The Best Bourbon Under $100

The over $50 and under $100 bourbon whiskey category is where it gets interesting. There are some all time great options available in this corner and many can be easily found.

My top two are Booker’s bourbon and Four Roses Single Barrel Barrel Proof (SBBP). Booker’s batches consistently knock the ball out of the park. Four Roses SBBP offer so much variety and potential for greatness.

On the flip side, Buffalo Trace dominates this price range and category but their bourbons are much harder to find. Buckle up for our best bourbon under $100 ratings.

Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Year Bourbon

Highly Allocated

Distillery: Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery

 Russell's Reserve Single Barrel Bourbon

Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel Bourbon

Readily Available

Distillery: Wild Turkey Distillery

 The Best Bourbon Over $100

Many will shake their heads and sigh at this over $100 category. I’m going to include some no brainers like the Pappy Van Winkle bourbons, but you can’t have a complete list and especially not one with over $100 bourbon with out those no brainers.

These rare bourbons are assumed in this category precisely because they’re universally hard to find bourbons and the best top shelf whiskeys money can buy. Without further ado, these are the top bourbon brands over $100.

 Pappy Van Winkle 23 Year

Pappy Van Winkle 15 Year, 20 Year, & 23 Year

Highly Allocated

Distillery: Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery
Location: Frankfurt, KY
MSRP: $119-$299
Hunting Notes: Unless you have a close relationship with a store owner, just get lucky, or win a bourbon lottery, chances are you’re not seeing Pappy Van Winkle at retail. But the hunt is half the fun. Beware of counterfiets even at stores. Pappy is one of the expensive bourbon brands on the secondary market. The 23 Year Old Pappy is roundly considered one of the best aged bourbons while the 15 Year Old Pappy is known as the smoothest sipping bourbon.

William Larue Weller Bourbon

Buffalo Trace Antique Collection

Highly Allocated

Distillery: Buffalo Trace Distillery
Location: Frankfurt, KY
MSRP: $99
Hunting Tips: The Buffalo Trace Antique Collection includes:

  • George T. Stagg Straight Bourbon
  • William Larue Weller Straight Wheated Bourbon
  • Eagle Rare 17 year old Straight Bourbon
  • Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Straight Rye Whiskey
  • Sazerac 18 year old Straight Rye Whiskey

Just like with the Pappy Van Winkle collection. You need to be prepared for failure unless you are willing to pay way over MSRP. Handy and Sazerac aren’t bourbons but they are part of the BTAC collection, so we’ll make an exception. BTAC offer some of the best top shelf bourbons available.

King of Kentucky Kentucky Straight Bourbon

King of Kentucky Kentucky Straight Bourbon

Highly Allocated

Distillery: Brown-Forman Distillery
Location: Louisville, KY
MSRP: $250
Hunting Tips: Currently, it’s only available in Kentucky, Ohio, and Illinois. There were under 2,000 bottles and only a 26% yeild out of the barrel. May the odds be ever in your favor as you search for one of the best rare bourbons.

Four Roses Limited Edition Small Batch Bourbon

Four Roses Limited Edition Small Batch Bourbon

Highly Allocated

Distillery: Four Roses Distillery
Location: Lawrenceburg, KY
MSRP: $150
Hunting Tips: The Four Roses Small Batch Limited Edition is a personal favorite and the annual releases rarely disappoints. Most years they will release the first batch at the distillery and mainly Four Roses stans will camp out.

Old Forester Birthday Bourbon

Old Forester Birthday Bourbon

Highly Allocated

Distillery: Old Forester Distillery
Location: Louisville, KY
MSRP: $130
Hunting Tips: Birthday Bourbon is the big play Wide Receiver out of the Limited Releases on this list. There’s been some duds, but when it’s good it’s rrreeeaallll good. Again they release the first batch at the distillery, so if you’re ready to camp out you may have a shot.

Old Fitzgerald Bottled in Bond

Old Fitzgerald Bottled in Bond Decanter

Allocated

Distillery: Heaven Hill Distillery
Location: Bardstown, KY
MSRP: $100+
Hunting Tips: Comparatively, I’ve had the best luck finding this limited edition bourbon regularly. Heaven Hill offers three releases — one in the spring, one in the fall, and one distillery only. The Spring is a green label. The Fall is a black label. The Distillery Only is a red label. My favorites have typically been in the Fall, but nothing scientific about that.

Blade and Bow Bourbon 22 Year

Blade and Bow 22 Year Old Bourbon

Allocated

Distillery: Stitzel-Weller Distillery/Diageo
Location: Louisville, KY
MSRP: $450
Hunting Tips: Blade and Bow 22 Year Old Bourbon used to be the best value aged limited edition bourbon at $150 but as the bourbon market continues to explode the price jumped to the $450. It’s still a delicious, old bourbon but the price tag might give you pause since it’s now one of the most expensive bourbons on the over $100 bourbon list.

 Elijah Craig 18 Year

Elijah Craig 18 Year Old Bourbon

I’d say I 99.9% agree with what you have here! A few of these I haven’t tried yet but I’m making sure they’re on my list. The one I don’t care for is Blanton’s SFTB. I agree its worth trying but it just didn’t do it for me.

I actually don’t love original Blanton’s but really enjoyed SFTB. The beauty of having so many good bourbons.

Very well written article. Your palate is spot on. The one thing that’s missing for me is a good 14-15 year Knob Creek store pick. Once you find a store that has a barrel there’s USUALLY not a limit on bottles. Nice one to stock up on under the radar. Just as good or better than most Booker’s releases and a few bucks cheaper.
