Barrell Seagrass is another Frankenstein blend from Barrell Craft Spirits. They’ve married American and Canadian rye whiskeys finished in Martinique Rhum Agricole casks, apricot brandy casks, and Madeira barrels. Their goal was to create a drink reminiscent of a day at the beach. Damn it Barrell you’ve done it. I want to take a bottle Barrell Seagrass with me when I go to Panama City Beach this summer. I could imagine sipping this neat on a cool breezy summer night or making a delicious fruity cocktail to take to the beach.

Barrell Seagrass Finished Rye Whiskey Review

Barrell Seagrass Finished Rye Whiskey Review

According to Barrell:

Barrell Seagrass is an ode to coastal memories, blended to evoke the joy of a day on the beach and an evening listening to the soothing rhythm of waves. Hot sun, brisk air, dry sand, and oceanside vegetation are brought to mind. A ripe and inviting tropical nose and grassy, bright body evolve to a finish as long as the view down the shore on a clear day.

Nose – 93 out of 100 Points

The aromas are subtly fruity but not your typical fruit notes. I’m picking up prickly pear, orange honeydew melons, and papaya. These are subtle but anchor the nosing experience. I also smell saltwater taffy, toasted oak, and rye spice which is a nice counterbalance to the sweeter tropical notes. Overall it’s a delicious but understated nose.

Taste – 94 out of 100 Points

The nose was just a tease. Those understated fruit aromas turned bold. Our local Costco has been carrying these tropical sorbets that are bright and delicious. That’s what this palate reminds me of. There’s no mistaking it is rye with the grain spice as well as subtle floral notes that bloom at the back of the palate. It’s a great whiskey to just chew on. The mouthfeel is phenomenal.

Finish – 93 out of 100 Points

The finish is long and creamy. It’s rye spice, vanilla yogurt, and tropical melon undertones.

Complexity – 94 out of 100 Points

This rye whiskey has complexity and depth for days. It’s a masterful example of what finishing and blending can achieve.

Value – 93 out of 100 Points

Retail for Barrell Seagrass is $79.99. Well worth it based on the flavor, complexity, and balance. Another delicious multi-finish blend from Barrell Craft Spirits.

Verdict – Gold 93.4 out of 100 Points
