Barrell Bourbon Private Release BA1C Review

May 31, 2021

Glencairn Whiskey Glass

This Barrel Bourbon Private Release was offered at my local Total Wine. Barrell does their “single barrel” program a bit differently which I like. They are known for their blending prowess. These Private Releases function in much the same way a single barrel would. Here’s how Barrell Craft Spirits works these out:

  • Micro-blending of bourbon from Kentucky, Tennessee, and Indiana
  • Four different ages blended in ex-bourbon barrels
  • Each blend is only made once

Barrell Bourbon Private Release BA1C is named TW Pancakes at Dawn. It is 114.6 proof and 57.33% ABV and blends 5YO (45%), 10YO (25%), 14YO (25%), & 16YO (5%) bourbons. It truly tasted like syrupy pancakes. Let’s get into the tasting.

Barrell Bourbon Private Release BA1C Review

Barrell Bourbon Private Release BA1C

Nose – 93 out of 100 Points

In my Glencairn whiskey glass, BA1C truly smells like buttered pancakes and maple syrup. Straight up. It made me want to have a pour with breakfast the next morning.

Taste – 93 out of 100 Points

The palate is more of the same but with a reduced down cherry compote and spicy red pepper. The sweet fruit and spice counterbalanced each other well adding layers of complexity.

Finish – 92 out of 100 Points

Great finish. All those breakfast pancakes and the cherries stick to the throat —  balanced heat and sweet.

Complexity – 92 out of 100 Points

The flavors in this bourbon are simple (sometimes simple is better) yet complex.

Value – 91 out of 100 Points

A friend (thanks Kyle) shared a sample, and I went out to buy a bottle after tasting it. Even at just south of $100, it’s a great buy. This Barrell Bourbon Private Release is a masterclass in micro-blending. I don’t know any other distilleries off the top of my head who offer a program quite like Barrell’s Private Release Blending program.

Verdict – Silver 92.2 out of 100 Points
