Baker’s 13 Year Old Single Barrel Review (Complete Guide)

Baker’s 13 Year Old Single Barrel is the first ever limited release for Jim Beam’s Baker’s Bourbon brand. It will be followed by a standard release Baker’s bourbon single barrel that will retail at $70 and be a minimum of 7 years old.

“Baker’s Bourbon has always been a bit of a hidden gem of our portfolio,” said Fred Noe, Beam’s 7th Generation Master Distiller. “With my cousin Baker’s blessing, we’ve decided to give his namesake brand a little bit of the spotlight it deserves. We hope the folks who currently enjoy Baker’s enjoy it even more as a single barrel offering, and that some more folks want to add it to their repertoire.”

According to Whiskey Advocate:

Jim Beam master distiller Fred Noe came to New York on Tuesday to launch the new Baker’s, and he told me that the 83 year old Baker Beam himself—former distiller at Jim Beam’s Clermont distillery, and cousin of Booker Noe, who created the Baker’s brand—selected and approved several single barrels in this initial rollout. Jim Beam will continue expanding on the Baker’s line in the coming years, potentially through wood finishes.

That’s amazing that Baker had such a thorough hand in this roll out, and I’m excited to see what they do with the brand and wood finishing.

Baker said:

“For 27 years, I’ve been proud to lend my name to Baker’s Bourbon, and I’m excited for this new chapter,” said Baker Beam. “Baker’s has always been enjoyed by people who know a thing or two about their whiskey, and I think our fans are in for a real treat as we let the character of each single barrel come through. Let’s get the barrel rolling!”

Beam’s notes “Medium bodied with flavors of oak, toasted nuts and vanilla.”


Medium viscosity. Apple juice.

Nose – 95 Points

Charred oak, dark, rich caramel, burnt sugar, and toasted baking spices. It’s a complex and balanced nose.

Taste – 91 Points

Black pepper and toasted baking spice that tingles the tip of your tongue and warms your mouth. The middle of the palate gets smooth sweetness. Oak rounds things out. Think a delicious and less sweet pecan pie.

Finish – 92 Points

Black pepper and oak hit the back of the throat and warm all the way down. It’s intense at the start but quickly rounds out.

Verdict – The Bourbon Bard Gold (92 Points)

Buy if you can find. It’s delicious. It’s not a overly sweet bourbon on the palate and finish. It’s more complex baking spice, pepper, and oak. I’m usually a huge fan of fruit and caramel flavors in my bourbon but there was just something I enjoyed about this Baker’s.
